This article describes the use of the 100/1000BASE-T1 Media Converter H-MTD with a Tesla vehicle. This applies to Model S and Model X (2021 to Feb-2022) that employ the 1000BASE-T1 communication over the diagnostic connector located in the driver footwell.

The 100/1000BASE-T1 Media Converter H-MTD is a media converter that supports both 1000BASE-T1 and 100BASE-T1 technologies and uses the Rosenberger H-MTD connector for the T1 automotive Ethernet port. The device offers advanced features such as port diagnostic, cable test, speed auto-negotiation, automatic T1 pair swap, and many others.

The 100/1000BASE-T1 Media Converter realizes a bi-directional physical layer conversion between 100/1000BASE-T1 and Fast/Gigabit Ethernet networks. The converter is easily configurable via on-board switches and its status is visualised by multiple LEDs. Advanced features such as frame generator and cable diagnostic are available, and the device can also be used as a USB-CAN(/FD) interface. An open communication protocol over CAN(/FD) and USB can be used to programmatically read the port status and configure the parameters.

New firmware releases for 100BASE-T1 Media Converter and 100BASE-T1 USB Interface enable the unit to act as a USB-CAN interface. This feature can be used simultaneously with 100BASE-T1 conversion function. The new firmwares also enable the user to generate test modes on the 100BASE-T1 port.

A flexible automotive network interface that features one Ethernet port, two CAN FD channels, a LIN channel, a USB and RS-232 port, and multiple I/Os. The device offers user-scripting feature which allows to run user applications directly on the interface. The device can act as a Ethernet-CAN(/FD) or Ethernet-LIN interface as well as CAN(/FD)-LIN gateway.

An electronic control unit that offers up to two CAN/CAN FD channels, a LIN channel, and several multi-purpose digital/analogue inputs and outputs. The control unit can realize a stand-alone communication bridge between CAN (/FD) and LIN buses, or act as a remote I/O module.
